Mars Wrigley Confectionery UK shares business commitments to Inclusion & Diversity

Mars has been the home of some of the UK’s best loved brands – from Chocolate and Confectionery to Rice and Petfood – for over 80 years. We’re also the home to over 4,000 Associates (that’s what we call our employees!) Every one of our Associates is different, but the one thing we all have in common is that we work for Mars.

At Mars, we are guided by our Five Principles - Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom. It’s the thread that runs through our diverse business, and it’s because of this we want to be a great place to work that’s based on respect, fairness and equal treatment for all.

Inclusion unlocks Diversity; we have the responsibility to foster an inclusive environment which will bring diversity to the workplace. In order to celebrate and continue Mars’ commitments to foster a workplace culture which supports this, we recently hosted an Inclusion & Diversity panel at our Mars Wrigley Confectionery UK headquarters in Slough.

The panel brought together senior leaders from across the global business to talk about Mars’ commitment to promote an environment where every Associate is valued for their unique perspective, beliefs, experience and personality.

As well as our Associates, the event was attended by members of the Slough Youth Parliament and the Slough LGBT Youth Group. The pupils, representing seven local schools, had a unique chance to meet our Global Inclusion and Diversity Director, Michelle Thomas, and UK Confectionery Sales Director, Rez Hassan, as well as our Global Vice-President for P&O (HR), Becky Snow.

Michelle Thomas, our Global Inclusion & Diversity Director said that "We're looking for acceptance, not tolerance. Every one of us is different and we want to celebrate those differences to have a brighter tomorrow."

The panellists shared their personal stories about the importance of inclusion in the workplace and how important it is for businesses to reflect the diversity of their community. Mars’ commitments to inclusivity were shared during the panel, including the signing of a new partnership with LGBT equality charity Stonewall.

Rez Hassan, our UK Confectionery Sales Director elaborated, "We work for an organisation that embraces smashing those glass ceilings away. Whatever is unique for you, important to you, feel free to push the boundaries as far as you want to go."

Michael Lynch, our Mars Wrigley Confectionery UK P&O Director concluded the panel saying:

“Our Five Principles have always guided our efforts to build a workplace where everyone feels included and has the opportunity to do what they do best every day. Today’s panel discussion has provided us a great opportunity to celebrate and reiterate Mars’ Inclusion & Diversity commitments and start the conversation with our Associates about the next steps of our journey.”
